Week 5&6

These would be the most exciting and enjoyable week of my internship. BR had organized a Government Service Tax (GST) seminar by inviting speaker from Training.com Asia Sdn Bhd. The purpose of this seminar is to provide participants to have a complete understanding to this new tax system in enabling BR staffs to excel better with their company financial system more effectively even with the presence of GST.

A week before this GST seminar, I heard my colleagues were discussing about this topic during lunch hour. As an intern in BR, I thought that I would not be invited to the GST seminar. However, I was quite surprised to see my senior gave me an application from of the GST seminar for me to fill in my particulars. I felt very glad and blessed as I was invited to the GST seminar despite that I was just an intern of the company.

The venue of this seminar was held in a meeting room of the company and it was conducted by Ms. Rekha Prabagaran. She holds a Bachelor of Business in Banking & Finance (majoring in Accounting) from Moash University, Australia and a Diploma in Business and Certificate of Business & Information Technology from Monash College, Australia. Besides, she has over 16 years of working experience and has conducted training for various business sectors. Her education background and experiences had inspired me a lot and I wish to become a successful person like her in the future.

This GST seminar has been separated into two parts. The first part of the seminar has covered the key topics of implementing Goods & Services Tax in Malaysia. These topics include Scope and Charge of GST, Taxable Person, Supply of Goods & Services, Input tax as well as GST Treatment on Specific Industries. On the other hand, the second part covered topics about claim of input tax credits, registration of GST, audit and record keeping as well as transactional issues. From here, I was able to learn the importance of GST information that I did not know before. Moreover, this seminar also gave me the opportunity to get in-depth knowledge about GST which I could not obtain in my degree course.

A few days after the seminar, BR had upgraded the existing UBS accounting system with GST compliant accounting software in it. However, before upgrading their accounting software, BR had collected their clients’ information about GST such as their GST ID, industry code, company name, address and etc. Therefore, Mr Colin assigned me to key in these clients’ information into the UBS accounting system. As the GST implementation is starting around the corner, the company needs to get prepared by updating their clients’ information into their accounting software as soon as possible. I was given about over hundreds of BR clients to key into the system. Although this task seems an easy for me, I faced several problems when carrying out this task. One of the most problematic issues that I faced was that the clients provide the wrong industry code to BR or some of them even forgot to include the code in the form given to them. Hence, I am responsible to make calls to the client to obtain the correct information from them. Due to the mistakes made by client, it had caused my work to delay. Besides, I also need to make sure that I keyed in the correct information into the system.

Although I faced some problems in performing the task assigned, I never give up and feel frustrated as I realised that all challenges were learning path for me. Hence, I will seek for guidance from my seniors and overcome them. Moreover, being able to work with my seniors provide me a very good learning opportunities to learn from more experienced seniors. I always believe that the secret of our success is that we never ever give up.
