Internship Preparation

Before I started to undergo my internship, I had attended several pre-internship workshops which were organized by the Career Services Centre of Taylor’s University. The workshops include exploration of techniques in evaluating potential positions; resumes and cover letter writing tips by professional; interview techniques and requirements for our internship preparation. I find that these workshops were very essential for me as it brings the path for me to be ready for my internship in the coming months.

My first internship preparation was writing my resume. Basically, a resume is a written compilation of our education, career objectives, work experiences, credentials, and accomplishments. Resumes are incredibly important as they are the first and necessary step in getting one’s foot in the door with the employer. Hence, it should be a clear, accurate and concise document.

After I decided which company I wish to apply, I started to prepare cover letters. During the workshop, I have taught that a cover letter serves as the first introduction to an employer, and it is an opportunity to convey one's viability as a strong candidate. In the cover letter, I have included several elements. For instance, there is a brief introduction about myself, discussion of my qualifications and working experiences, specify why I am interested in the organization, request for an interview and thank the employer.

The next internship preparation that I did was for the interview sessions. From the pre-internship workshop, I understood that the key success of an interview does not rest solely on one’s performance in an interview but also how well one is prepared. In order to secure my job and leave a good impression to the interviewer, I did some research to understand more about the company, know my skills, interest and goals as well as the reason why I am fit the position. When I am well prepared, I am able to present myself in a very confident and professional manner because I am much calmer and better organized.

Lastly, a week before I undergo my internship at BR, I have also done several preparation in order to be fully prepared for the internship. The first preparation I did was to know exactly how to get to the working place and where to park. Few days before I started my internship, I actually took a test drive to the office so that I am able to know the correct route there and familiarize with the place. Then, I also need to double confirm whom to ask for when I arrive on the first day. In the aspects of attire, I need to ensure how to dress appropriately and professionally. As this was my first job experience, I had also gone to shop for formal attires for my internship. Finally, I need to get ready with relevant documents which are requested by BR’s HR Department (i.e. Appointment letter; Academic Results; Photostat IC; Passport-sized photo).
